Notes from the Cellar

Hola my Amigos,

This Saturday Bob Huey is here from Charles River Wine, yes the same company that Sabrina Reming had worked for. She has moved on to a different company in a new territory and we wish her the best. This route and these wines were left in capable hands with Bob. He has plenty of experience in the wine business and will be informative and knowledgeable about these wines and it should be a great time.

We are starting a new segment in the newsletter “From the Cheese Case” Pamela with assistance from Stina, the Henry’s Market Cheese Monger, will be featuring a new Cheese or Chacuturie Item every week.

We are also planning a special Black Tie Tasting (or any fancy threads you own) for Saturday October 1st.,from 7pm until 10pm. and this is how it will work;
* The cost is the purchase of 1 bottle of wine, your choice over $15.00
* We will pour half of this Wine in a decanter for you to enjoy.
* The remaining Wine is then available for everyone to taste!
* This should provide up to 30 different Wines to taste and Purchase at 10% and 15% off a case or more.
This should be a fun social event and a great wine experience for all. As this develops we will have more details. You can Call us at 978-524-0300, E-mail at info@henryswinecellar.com, or come by.

We are almost full but a couple spaces remain for the Free Beer 101 class being held Thursday September 22nd, 5:30 – 7:30pm. Kyle Sartanowicz, a Craft Beer Expert will be here to conduct the class which will cover the Raw ingredients that go into Beer as well as tasting and Food pairing. Space is limited so if you are interested please sign up now by either calling the store at 978-524-0300, e-mail -info@henrywinecellar.com or come by.
We have been invited to join the festivities and will have a representative from Shipyard Brewery pouring their fine Ales on Thursday September 29th from 4-7pm.
Hello to you all,

I just want to start by thanking everyone who came to last Saturday’s Rose’ tasting. We sold a lot of Rose’ and hopefully some of you tasted and learned some things about this under-appreciated wine. We have plenty left so come in and stock up for the summer!

This week’s tasting is from Marc Bergeron (no relation to Tom) of Monsieur Touton, a very good importer of European wines, and some domestic as well. We have 7 wines this week and it’s quite a mix geographically and stylistically – they are listed below.

I’m also adding 3 more wines to the Case sale, which some people have taken advantage of already. These are wines that I bought from a company that was liquidating some inventory and because of this, the pricing is significantly less for some great Summer wine.

And last but not least, is our Thursday Beer Tasting. This week it’s Harpoon Brewery, a great opportunity to taste some of the area’s best beer. It starts at 5pm and goes til 7(ish).
Featured Beers;
U.F.O. Raspberry
U.F.O. White
Summer Ale
Leviathan Imperial Ale

Hello to you all,

This week we have a great tasting planned on Saturday with Bell Winery. As was mentioned last week, Sandra Bell came by and we tasted her wines and were quite pleased with the quality as compared to the price. Her husband was the wine maker of the iconic Georges De La Tour Private Reserve from Beaulieu Vineyards. The line-up is listed below.

We also have a lot of new wines in the store with more coming! We’ve gone to some great tastings and had some great wines from all over. We will be mentioning these wines every week and also having tastings here, so stay tuned. Oh, and don’t forget the Rose’s !!! We have an amazing selection all ready and more coming in. Though it doesn’t feel like spring we’ll be dipping our toes in the water before you know it.

And lastly– but not least– Kurt Remming is making an appearance! We will be doing an Easter/ Kurt Reunion tasting on the 16th of April. Kurt is working for Pasternak Wines, one of the better portfolios on the market with many wines you have seen and that will be worth checking out. We will be focusing this tasting on wines that pair well with Easter faire and feature over 20 wines so this will be a much Bigger tasting than usual. Come in and say hi and hopefully buy some wine to support Kurt and his future endeavor.

Thank you all,

Reprinted & typed from GLOBAL Market Update from T.F. Kinnealey & Company

We are currently faced with some of the highest Meat Prices of all time. Between Cattle Futures, Feed, Fuel, and Production costs on the rise it has created a Perfect Storm which has created pricing increases that we have never been faced with before. Hopefully this update will help understand some of the issues that we are presented with.

Beef Market Outlook

Cattle Futures blaze away at record high numbers. April is already brushing up against $115. That means $1.96 dressed carcass costs for USDA commodity cattle in April compared to this past December where the USDA dressed carcass costs average $1.60. That is an increase in carcass costs of $288 per head year over year. We have already seen an increase of $160 per head since December on commodity cattle, leaving packers with no choice but to continue to raise our prices.

Feed increased 0.8% last month and have risen 15.8% over the twelve month period ending in February, the biggest year on year rise since the labor department’s index was first published in September 1977. Corn moves to record highs and has almost doubled in cost since last year.

Production costs, including for energy, water, and land are likely to climb as there is increasing scarcity.

Petroleum import prices rose 3.7% in February, and were up 20.6% on the year.

Wow it sure looks like this is going to be a long winter. It’s time to stock up and make sure you have a nice bottle of red to sip on while you are hunkered down. Remember, as an added bonus, that sales tax is no longer applied to wine purchases.

Lately I’ve had Bordeaux on my mind. Tonight and this Saturday we will feature a few new Red Bordeaux at our wine tastings. See below for a complete list of the wines we will be pouring. It’s not a coincidence that the weather will be clear tonight and Saturday so you can come visit us and taste some great wines. See you then!

Last Saturday we tasted the 2008 Puydeval from the Languedoc region of France. Every year I buy a bunch of this for myself. This wine first arrived late last year and was so tannic it sat open for 3 days before it became drinkable. I met with winemaker Jeff Carrell in France during my April visit and he said not to try it again until October and it still needed some time in the bottle because it was an especially good year. Well it’s October and I have the last 4 cases of this beauty which got 90 points from Robert Parker. I’ve included the full review below. If it’s still not ready, I would suggest putting it away in the cellar for a few more months. I know I will!

Last week I hinted at a beer tasting and now I can confirm next Friday the 29th from 5 to 7PM, we will taste locally brewed beers from The Haverhill Brewery located at the Tap in Haverhill, Cody Brewing of Amesbury, and Clown Shoes beers brewed right nearby in Ipswich and sample outstanding Chile Con Queso and Black Bean Chipotle Dips also made locally by Chili Choice in Gloucester. See below for more information.

Finally, don’t forget to save the date of our Holiday Grand Tasting on Saturday, November 13th from 2 to 6PM and please consider joining our friends at Tryst for their Wine Diner on Tuesday, November 9th.

Early Fall is a great time for wine tasting. I just spent the last few weeks attending several events and tasted over 500 wines. Some were new vintages of store favorites and others were wines new to me. Look for these wines to start arriving over the next few weeks and show up in our Thursday and Saturday tastings.

Malbec continues to garner a great deal of interest and we will explore this wonderful varietal in a special Malbec tasting on Thursday October 21st. And don’t forget to mark your calendar on Saturday November 13th we will do a Grand Tasting of wines to serve with your holiday meal.

This week’s tastings continue with some very interesting wines. First up, tonight we will sample a Dornfelder from Germany which is a sweet red wine, and a Monastrell from Spain which gets 90 points from the Wine Advocate. Monastrell is known as Mouvedre in France.

Saturday we will get to experience some “older” wines from the outstanding 2002 vintage in California. These wines from Lolonis are organic, blended by Jed Steele, and had only 300 cases produced. They originally sold for $30 but I got a special price and will be selling them for $15. Come join us to see how these wines have held up.
